GENEVA – What weighs 5,500 pounds and showcases a pair of large, high-definition video screens measuring 14 feet wide by 10 feet tall?
The Chicago Steel’s new, team-funded scoreboard, that’s what. The USHL club unveiled it Wednesday.
“Wait until you walk in from underneath,” team president Dan Lehv said. “It just pops right in front of you. It’s going to be awesome.”
Forest Park-based Sievert Electric began construction on the new scoreboard Dec. 14, and the structure was raised to the rafters Jan. 4. The Steel, who relocated from Bensenville in the summer, moved two panels of the previous scoreboard to the arena’s end walls.
“I’m excited to see how it works and stuff and get it going in the games,” Steel forward Tanner Laczynski said.
Each video screen features hundreds of 10 mm LED lights. The Steel, whose next home game is against Muskegon (Michigan) at 3 p.m. Jan. 17, also will introduce a new pregame light show.
Lehv said the improvements are designed to help change Fox Valley Ice Arena “from a recreational rink to an entertainment venue.”
